The Extraction

Extracting data from different internal and external, structured and/or unstructured source systems is the first stage of an ETL process. This can be quite tricky, as only data relevant at that point in time and extracted correctly will govern the outcome. A simple request is sent to the source systems, using in-house connections, message queuing, open database connectivity (ODBC) or Object Linking and Embedding, Database (OLE-DB) middleware. Most data repositories collate data from various sources. Each data bit may be in its source's format, which could be in relational and non-relational database structures. The aim of the extraction phase is to convert all data into a specific format for transformation processing. Some ETL tools can do this automatically. The data is then moved into what is called the Staging Area.

The Transformation

Once the data is available in the Staging Area, it is all on one platform and one database. It becomes easy to merge tables, filter and sort the data using specific attributes. A set of rules or functions are applied to the extracted data from the source to derive the data for loading into the end target. Usually, some transformation may be required to meet the business and technical needs of the target database, like translating coded values, sorting, applying simple or complex data validation, etc.

The Loading

Data is loaded into the end target, usually the warehouse, as fact/ dimension tables. From there the data can be aggregated and loaded into datamarts or cubes as felt appropriate. Since the requirements tend to be organization specific, this process could vary widely.

The ETL process is also referred to as Data Integration process. ETL manages processes like data migration, data management, data cleansing, data synchronization and data consolidation.
