Beef tallow is typically rendered, purified, and filtered before being incorporated into products such as balms, creams, moisturizers, and beef tallow skin facial products. Some people also use plain, purified tallow directly on their skin. The idea behind tallow-based skincare is that its lipid-rich composition can provide an occlusive layer that helps reduce moisture loss from the skin.

What Is Beef Tallow?

Beef tallow is a solid fat produced by rendering beef fat, particularly fat from areas around organs and other tissues. Rendering involves heating the fat and separating the purified fat from water, proteins, and other materials. When properly processed, tallow is relatively firm at room temperature but softens or melts with warmth.

For skincare, the quality and processing of the tallow are important. Cosmetic-grade or carefully purified tallow is generally preferred because it can have a smoother texture and fewer impurities or odors.

How Is Beef Tallow Used on Skin?

Beef tallow can be used as a moisturizer or as an ingredient in skin creams and balms. A small amount is usually warmed between the fingers before being spread over the skin. It can be applied to areas that commonly become dry, such as the hands, elbows, knees, feet, and other rough areas.

Tallow-based facial products are also marketed for dry or sensitive-feeling skin. However, facial skin can react differently from body skin, so introducing a new product gradually is sensible. People with acne-prone skin may also want to test a small area first because rich, occlusive products can feel heavy or may not suit everyone.
